SiFive unveils BigSky SF-2U870, pushing RISC‑V into data centers

SiFive is bringing RISC-V datacenter deployment closer to the mainstream with the new BigSky SF-2U870. It is an enterprise RISC-V CPU-based development server for hyperscalers, semiconductor companies, software vendors, and ecosystem partners. SiFive unveiled it in Santa Clara on August 24, 2026, alongside the Hot Chips conference. The rack-mountable 2U system gives teams a ready environment to port software, tune performance, optimize AI models, and validate full stacks on SiFive’s latest RISC-V platform.

The launch is a key milestone for RISC-V. The architecture has expanded from embedded devices into demanding compute workloads. BigSky aims to replace experimental or generic hardware with a turnkey system that fits standard enterprise workflows. Early access customers—including major hyperscalers and leading software and SoC companies—are already running real workloads on deployed units.

Industry Leadership Driving RISC-V Datacenter Adoption

“SiFive is working closely with industry leaders to speed up RISC-V datacenter deployment around the world,” said Patrick Little, Chairman and CEO of SiFive. Little called BigSky a high-performance platform for accelerating workload and software development on the open RISC-V standard. Little also said SiFive’s goal is to help customers reduce total cost of ownership for custom SoCs built with SiFive IP. “RISC-V in the datacenter is not a far-off goal anymore. It is happening right now, and SiFive is leading the charge.”

Software Ecosystem Support Built for Enterprise Workflows

The BigSky SF-2U870 is compliant with the RVA-23 profile. That profile standardizes the enterprise baseline and reduces bring-up work. Out-of-the-box OS support includes Canonical Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. The platform can also run NVIDIA CUDA and AMD ROCm codebases natively. That means LLMs can run on compatible accelerator cards. Together, these features show how much the RISC-V software ecosystem has matured. They also position BigSky as a practical RISC-V AI development platform for cloud-native teams.

Canonical highlighted the importance of software readiness. Gordan Markuš, Director of Silicon Alliances at Canonical, said native Ubuntu 26.04 LTS support provides an enterprise-grade base for AI and cloud-native workloads. Markuš said the collaboration helps customers port established workloads with confidence. It also lets them introduce RISC-V into today’s datacenter environments.

Hardware Specs Built for Demanding Development Work

The SiFive BigSky RISC-V server targets heavy development and validation. Each SF-2U870 includes 32 SiFive P870-D enterprise RISC-V CPU cores at 2.2 GHz and 256 GB of DDR5-5600 memory. It supports PCIe expansion and a double-wide x16 GPU up to 450 W. Storage includes a 3.84 TB U.2 NVMe SSD for data and a separate 960 GB SATA SSD for the OS. Networking comes via a 10/25Gb OCP 3.0 NIC.

For engineering teams, the configuration supports broad testing. Teams can evaluate operating systems, compilers, libraries, databases, and AI frameworks. They can also validate accelerated applications on production-style hardware. This helps partners find compatibility gaps earlier, improve performance, and reduce risk before committing to mass silicon.

Industry Reaction: A Major Turning Point for RISC-V

Analysts see BigSky as evidence of a shift in the server market. Patrick Kennedy, President of Axautik Group and ServeTheHome, called the systems “a major turning point.” Kennedy pointed to the breadth of datacenter software already running on them as proof of fast-growing RISC-V support.

Broad adoption depends on more than CPU speed. Developers need stable hardware, supported operating systems, accelerator compatibility, and standard networking and storage. They also need tools that match production environments. BigSky combines these elements in a rackable server. That reduces the gap between early RISC-V trials and production deployment.
